My heart belongs to Ashes.

Well OK, to Gene Hunt - and if you'd told me that back when I was watching Life on Mars I probably wouldn't have believed you. I'm longing for tonight's episode, yet dreading it.

My thoughts on the series - inspired mainly by the last three episodes - can be found HERE. And yes, as usual, I'm all about symbolism and Gene Hunt being a Big Damn Hero.

It's so easy, with this show, to look for meaning in everything said and done. Sometimes the message is simple (Hunt leaves bicycles in Keats' office, both turning it back into storage space and telling him: On your bike?) at other times more complex. ( In which I question, quote and ponder )

Episode Two - Meta

To begin, I can admit it, it looks as if I was totally wrong in regards to my theory about one Jim Keats.

I thought the episode itself was extraordinarily strong, far surpassing last week and possibly outdoing much of the last two series. Nothing is incidental, nothing is coincidence, and there's a light, deft, touch at the controls. David Drury, Howard Burch and Ashley Pharoah are doing amazing work. This series, Ashes feels as competent and compelling a show as Life on Mars. It finally feels like that shows true successor.

I never actually finished the review I started on last years finale. Well, not until today anyway. And Nine months after the fact, the meta has morphed into something which is more questions than answers. It is less about the finale, as a stand-alone, and more about the arc, the journey, Alex and Gene.

But still worth a gander, I think.

There are many things that I could say about this week's episode, not least that Morph is love, and that the teaser has to be the greatest piece of telly I've ever seen. If it isn't hijacked and you-tubed by now, there's no justice in this fannish world.
